Working With Us
At Dunedin Monumental Masons we aim to take you through the process of choosing and installing a memorial with minimal stress. Here are some of our most commonly asked questions, to help guide your decision-making.
How much will a headstone cost? A plaque can cost as little as $345, or you can spend as much as you wish on a custom-made headstone or memorial. Most people would spend between $3,000 and $5,000. We have headstones and memorials to fit everyone's needs. Call into our showroom to view our large display and discuss what we can create for you.
Can I choose the size, shape and colour of the memorial? Yes, you can. There may be some Council regulations for you to consider, but we can help you to choose from our wide range of materials and styles, and you may wish to add a floral tribute or personalised design - both of these can significantly enhance a memorial. We can also help you with your inscription, and before we proceed you will be able to review a scaled proof of your design.
Can I have a photo? Yes, we can supply porcelain photos in colour or black in a variety of shapes and sizes, from miniature through to 24cm x 18 cm. Engraved photos are also available in Black Granite.
Do I need a memorial base? Yes you will need a base, Council by-laws will determine the size of a memorial's base. Your headstone base can include a flower vases and we can also inscribe the base with a name, epitaph, or design.
Who will install the memorial? Dunedin Monumental Masons are registered tradesmen and look after the installation of all memorials. Being members of the NZ Master Monumental Masons Association, we install all memorials to the New Zealand Standards as a minimum.
How long will this take? If your choose a headstone or plaque from our stock we can have it completed and installed in 3-6 weeks. As all granite is imported, a custom-design or special colour will take 10-12 weeks.
Dunedin Monumental Masons, founded by a former staff member of R. Millan & Sons, commenced business in Dunedin in 1967. The company was acquired in 1989 by Colin Morton, then later by son Craig, who currently manages the business in conjunction with his wife Lisa. Lisa is the incumbent president of the New Zealand Master Monumental Masons Association and Craig is a past president as well as a member of the National Advisory Group for the industry training.
As a result of their 60-years of combined hands-on craftsmanship and expertise, Dunedin Monumental Mason has been contracted for the restoration of historic stonework with the NZ Historic Cemeteries Trust and Councils throughout the region, including the refurbishment of many War Monuments in the greater Otago area.
